The Mr. Ken dining room in the evening

Concept

What is an izakaya?

In Japan, the izakaya is where you go after work. You order a beer or a sake and a few small dishes, put them in the middle and share. Then another round. It's not about a big meal – it's about sitting (or standing) together.

The word combines 居 (to stay) and 酒屋 (sake shop): originally a shop where people stayed on to drink after buying.

Kenta and Satoko

Kenta and Satoko

Kenta was born in Osaka and has lived in Munich for more than 17 years. He has always worked in hospitality here, including at Schumann's Bar and Shoya.

Satoko is from Tokyo and has been in Munich for ten years. She also worked at Shoya, and at Acquarello.

Mr. Ken is their first place of their own. Why Osaka? In Osaka, Kenta says, people are more adventurous about food than in Tokyo: more colourful, more direct, less formal. That's the kind of cooking they want here.

Skewers and small plates to share

What we serve – and what we don't

No classic sushi, no ramen. Munich has plenty of both.

In the evening there are small plates: grilled and fried skewers, house-made onigiri and vegetarian dishes such as tofu falafel. To drink: sake, highballs and Japanese beer.

Thursday to Saturday, Satoko cooks Japanese curry at lunchtime – milder than Thai curry, with a sauce all of its own.

The long bar along the wall

At the bar

A long bar runs along the wall. Stand there with an after-work beer, order a skewer and stay as long as you like. In Japan this is called tachinomi (立ち飲み): drinking standing up.

No booking needed for the bar – just drop by. For a table in the evening, it's best to book ahead.

Formerly TiVu

For seven years, Rumfordstraße 14 was home to TiVu. Same address, now with a Japanese kitchen. If you used to come to TiVu: come and say hello.
